On June 29, 2026, a local entrepreneur took an exciting step and officially registered her business. While this was a major milestone, many new business owners don’t realize that forming a business entity is only the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey.
As part of my work supporting small businesses, I use a Business Owner Basics Checklist that I designed to help entrepreneurs move from “I started a business” to “I’m ready to operate a business.”
During our consultation, we reviewed several critical areas that new business owners often overlook.
✅ Licenses and Permits
After discussing her business activities, we explored the importance of determining whether any local, state, or federal licenses and permits would be required before opening for business.
✅ State Tax Accounts
I guided her through establishing the appropriate tax accounts with the State of Missouri, helping ensure she could meet compliance requirements from day one.
✅ Local Requirements
Many entrepreneurs assume they need a business license everywhere they operate. Together, we confirmed that a business license was not required through St. Louis County for her specific situation. However, I helped her identify another important requirement: contacting the Assessor’s Office to complete a Personal Property Declaration.
✅ Business Banking
We discussed the value of choosing a banking partner that understands and supports small businesses. Rather than selecting just any bank, we explored how the right financial institution can provide services and resources that help a business grow.
✅ Business Software
We also reviewed why separating personal and business operations is important. We discussed the benefits of using business software instead of personal tools, including better recordkeeping, professionalism, and financial management.
The Outcome
By the end of our session, this entrepreneur had a much clearer understanding of what it takes to operate a business beyond simply registering it. She left with actionable next steps, increased confidence, and a roadmap for moving forward.
This experience reinforces something I tell every entrepreneur:
Starting a business is more than filing paperwork. Building a strong foundation from the beginning can save time, money, and frustration down the road.
