Have you ever had an issue where your computer crashed, and you were unable to retrieve your data to restore your computer back to the way it was? I’m sure you have gone through this problem more than once. In a recent study we did with a client it wasn’t their computer that crashed, it was their server. The server that housed all of their data. When we tried to retrieve their data, we found that they did not have a proper backup solution.
Sure their network was setup properly but how they were backing up was the issue. They originally setup a backup to where certain files were being backed up to a hard drive that was connected to the server. The hard drive was then changed out daily so that if one failed the other could be recovered. There was no cloud backup, nor did they check to ensure that their hard drives were actually backing up.
When their network went down, and we looked at their backups on the hard drives we noticed that the backups never successfully ran. At some point the hard drives failed and they were still changing out the hard drives thinking their data was being backed up. Since they had no cloud backup, they had no other way to retrieve their data. The amount of data that was lost was about 6 months of work.
6 months of work is a lot of data that needs to be restored. Since the backups failed, and they were unaware of the failure they now have to manually enter in data from 6 months ago. Losing time, money, and progress. In some cases, if data can’t be manually entered you risk losing that data forever.
In this case several things should have been in place to ensure their data backups were successfully backing up. Making sure you have the proper backup setup, checking the backups hourly and not daily, implementing cloud backup, and ensuring that you are backing up not just your network but files that sit on your desktop. Having the proper backup solutions in place will save your company time, money, and frustration.
